Have you ever woken up after a restful night of sleep and thought to yourself, “Man, my back is killing me?” If this is you, chances are you are NOT alone. Before you take the plunge to throw out your mattress, you might want to take a look at your sleeping posture.
Yes, you heard that right! Not only should you practice good posture throughout the day while you’re at work or marking off things on your honey-do list around the house, but also while you’re sleeping. By making simple changes in your sleeping posture, you can reduce the strain on your back and improve your quality of sleep!
Here are a few tips & tricks to make sure you get a good night’s rest without producing an achy back:
SIDE SLEEPERS
Be sure to draw your legs up slightly toward your chest and place a pillow between your legs. This positioning helps maintain a neutral spine to keep you comfy throughout the night!
BACK SLEEPERS
To protect the natural curve of your lower back, place a pillow under your knees and support your neck with a pillow.
STOMACH SLEEPERS
Sleeping on your stomach places the most strain on your back. If you can’t sleep any other way, reduce the strain by placing a pillow under your stomach for more support.
If you have tried all of these tips and are still waking up with an achy back, then Physical Therapy might be right for you!
